Day 390: Nini is What?

by claire, claire@trippingonwords.com

"Nini" (what) is a bad word. It is not really, per say, but it is to Claire and Lara. Because when a Tumaini child is using "nini," it means you have Even less hope than usual of ever understanding what might or might not be going on.

When the primary children came home two hours early from school today, we had a typical Nini Discussion. Amazingly, though, on its hurtling way to dead nowhere, Rhoda, who says she is eight or nine depending on the day, managed to save it with a highly coherent sentence.

Claire: Why are you home three hours early Rhoda?

Rhoda: Gey! (Rhoda's and everyone else's popular expletive meaning "God")

Claire: Why are you home three hours early Rhoda?

Rhoda: Teacher is sad.

Claire: Why?

Rhoda: Because we Nini.

Claire: What?

Rhoda: Because we Nini!

Claire: Rhoda!

Rhoda: Because we…we...because....we...what is opposite of quiet?

Yes, those are our calm, cool, and collected Tumaini children. Sending teachers packing in sadness everywhere.
