Day 189: Aeroflot Airlines and Gastronomy

We saw the deepest and coldest lake today. It was cold. We can confirm this. And it did indeed look deep. After seeing it with our own eyes, we have decided that we believe the Russians on these impressive facts. As for its ability to extend your life if you dip various parts of your body into it; we will have to see.

As it was Sunday, there were lots of Russians there with their families. It was really sunny and (comparitively) warm (we were still very very cold) and it seemed a slightly raucous and happy atmosphere, which was a wonderful surprise after our expectations of a touristy destination. Though, of course, we didn't really see any tourists heading that way with us at this time of year.

Seeing all these Russians at play, we learned other important facts about this surprisingly metropolitan and gorgeous area of Siberia. Russians do really drink vodka; lots of it. They also drink beer. Once it hit noon, we literally did not walk past a single adult Russian without a drink in their hand. We also did not pass a single picnic that did not feature whole dried fish as a main feature. The smell followed us. Lara reveled in vegetarianism.

Witnessing the standard Russian meal made us question the type of food we would receive on our 6 hour flight to Moscow tomorrow on the illustrious (but Delta-partnered! Claire has so far referenced this fact with relief 8 times today, and is currently researching EgyptAir's partners. Lara's miles hope it is partnered with someone impressive; Lara's ears hope it is not.) Aeroflot Airlines. But no worries, everyone! Options abound. This is the actual list from the website:

asian vegetarian
infant baby
child
dieabetic
fruit
gluten-free
high fiber
hindu kosher low calorie
low cholesterol/low fat
low protein
low sodium
muslim
oriental
low purine
standard

We do not know what many of these are, but do know that some of the titles are vaguely offensive.

Needless to say, we are even more excited for this flight than for the one we took to Singapore where we got to register as Reverend Williams and Professor Vogel...though the stewardesses will not actually refer to us by our meal titles as the Singaporean stewardesses did with our titles. Oh well.

Moscow or Bust!

Infant baby...? That does sound a little suspect. Thanks for the note =) hope all is going well.

Suggestion: Post a fancy Google Map on your blog of the Transiberian Railway route and location of Irkutsk for those of us less well-traveled.

Worlds deepest, coldest and largest lake by volume is Lake Baikal, sister lake to MY big lake, Superior, which is the largest in the world by area.

I know a few guys who live on Baikal. it used to be VERY polluted, but in recent years has begun to heal itself as many of the pollution sources are eliminated. sorry, too much info-eh?
